An Exciting Milestone

After months of analysis, community engagement, and workshops with Staff and Council we are excited to share the draft Fundy-St. Martins Rural Plan.  As we enter the next stage of this important community-building project, there are multiple opportunities to engage with project staff.

We have opened a discussion forum for residents to share their thoughts on the draft Fundy-St. Martins Rural Plan here.

There will be many opportunities to continue to provide input in the Rural Plan over the next few months:

  1. Tuesday May 21, 2024, 6:30 p.m. Public Presentation at Planning Review and Adjustment Committee (Simonds Fire Hall);
  2. Public Hearing #1, June 11, 2024, 7:00 p.m., Village Hall, St. Martins;
  3. Public Hearing #2, June 13, 2024, 7:00 p.m., Simonds Fire Hall;
  4. Village Council Meetings (July & August), dates and details TBD.

What is a Rural Plan?

A rural plan is a bylaw which provides a long-term vision for development in Fundy-St. Martins through your input and ideas. The bylaw determines what types of developments can be built where (commercial, residential, mixed use, etc), what natural resources should be protected, and where infrastructure is needed  (water supply, roads, etc.). Building and Development permit applications are then evaluated based on the policies and standards established by the community in your rural plan bylaw. All villages in New Brunswick are required to have an up-to-date rural plan.

How does it affect me?

A rural plan can be used to address issues like food insecurity and the need for affordable housing, and they may impact what you are permitted to build on your property according to the rules set by the community in your rural plan. New buildings and developments must meet the standards and permitted uses of the rural plan to receive a building permit, or they must apply for a variance or rezoning.
